WRITTEN BY Charmaine Carraway
I’ve lived much of my life by someone else’s standards and rules. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been doing what was expected of me—pleasing my family, following the advice of teachers, and walking the straight line that seemed safest. Now I am 25, fresh out of college, and looking at the world with new eyes.
The degree I worked so hard for is solid, practical, and secure. It promises stability, a steady paycheck, and a path that many people would consider “successful.” But if I’m honest, Auntie, my heart is pulling me somewhere else entirely.
I feel torn between choosing the road I’ve been prepared for—the “safe” choice—and the one I can feel in my bones, even if it’s less certain, even if it makes no sense to anyone else. I don’t want to waste my life climbing a ladder that isn’t leaning against the right wall.
What should I do?
Sweetheart, I hear you loud and clear, and I want you to know you are not alone in this tug-of-war between safety and soul. Every generation, every heart that dares to live authentically, wrestles with this question: do I take the road well-paved by others, or do I follow the call that won’t let me sleep at night?
Let me tell you something from lived experience—security without soul is a cage. It might be padded, comfortable, even admired by others, but if your spirit feels trapped, you’ll suffocate in silence. You’ll show up every day doing what you “should,” but that inner fire will burn to ashes. Safety without passion leads to complacency, and complacency, baby, is slow death.
Now, I won’t lie to you. The road of the heart isn’t always pretty. It comes with bumps, with setbacks, with the kind of adversity that tests you to your core. But here’s the truth: anything that demands your growth will demand some discomfort. And when you look back years from now, you will not regret choosing the road that stretched you into who you were meant to be.
Don’t worry yourself ragged about how it will all come together. That’s not your job. I had to learn this myself: we, as the created, are here to make the request, to set the intention, to walk in faith. It’s the Infinite One—the Source, the Divine—that orchestrates the details. Your task is to answer the call of your soul, even if others can’t hear it.
Life doesn’t have one blueprint. It doesn’t have one path. Your education is not wasted—it’s a foundation, a resource, a stepping stone. But it doesn’t have to be your prison. The road that is “safe” may look smooth, but if it isn’t nourishing you spiritually, emotionally, and creatively, it isn’t safe at all. It is toxic.
The soul knows what the soul needs. And your soul, beloved, is already whispering the direction. All that’s left is for you to honor that whisper with action. Because if you silence it now, it will only come back louder later—and by then, you might have more to untangle.
So go on. Take the road that calls your name. Walk it with courage, knowing that worth is greater than ease.
Soul Tribe, how many of us have lived under the weight of someone else’s script? How many of us have chased stability while starving our souls? This story is not just for the one who wrote in—it is for every one of us who has wrestled between the safe choice and the true choice.
The lesson here is clear: safety without fulfillment is no safety at all. The path of the heart might look uncertain, but it is the only road that guarantees growth, joy, and alignment. The world does not need more people living out of obligation. It needs more people living out of truth.
